Bedroom Move-out Makeover

Right before quarantine started in March, we moved out of our house. Lead abatement was being done and the space had to be emptied to ensure particles wouldn’t be left behind on the furniture and rugs. It was a big undertaking but with help from our families and a few friends, things quickly made their way into the storage pod parked in the driveway or to the basement where there wasn’t any lead.

We had been resourceful with thrifted dressers, wonky bed frames and making our bedroom space feel homey with layers of soft blankets and textiles. It wasn’t a fancy bedroom but it felt finished enough after we did a mini-makeover on it before our firstborn arrived in fall of 2018.

But moving out these pieces out to move them back in a month later seemed counterproductive and since we had recently found out we were expecting our second child, it seemed like the perfect time for a second, more permanent, round of bedroom redesign. I sold our reupholstered headboard and our dressers, Austin put the broken bed frame on the curb, and the rug, nightstands, lamps and mattress were the only pieces that got the ‘okay’ to be packed up into the storage pod.

I started looking at furniture that would fit our space and style and kept coming back to the bedroom selection from Article. If you’ve been following along over the years, you know that we are not-so-secret Article fans. Our family room sectional, our living room chairs and the sofa at our studio all came from Article. The price, the design and the quality haven’t disappointed us so far. And buying online, it’s nice to have positive past experience to work from.

We picked out the Tessa Glaze Gray upholstered bed frame, the Gabriola Ivory Boucle Bench, light oak Culla Dressers and a set of two Gabriola Ivory Boucle throw pillows.

The weeks away from home made the makeover even better. As we were taking down the curtains in the living room, we realized how much we liked the space without them so it freed them up to be used in the bedroom. So our color palette started to come together and mood boards were made. It also gave the furniture time to arrive without us “needing” it and once we had access to the house again, we were able to deep clean and touch up paint before bringing the furniture upstairs. Once the dressers were in place, I was able to assemble the bed frame and bench on my own while Austin and our families worked on other projects downstairs.

The upholstery fabric on the bed is the same tone of grey throughout the room. The pillows in the same fabric as the bench creates cohesion since most of the furniture we chose aren’t from the same line. The lamps we already had match the wood from the dressers and adding white shams we already had in the linen closet pulled the white in from the nightstands and the rug. I hemmed the green curtains that used to be in the living room and picked up a few green accents for the rest of the space to pull them in. The last accent color is a warm rosy/clay color with a pillow from a past photo shoot, throw blanket from the nursery and a copper metallic floor lamp that used to be in Austin’s office.

I feel very fortunate that this space was given new life before our second baby arrives. The last few months of enjoying the space has made us so much more mindful of making the bed, keeping the laundry chaos under control, and has even given us better rest with a non-noisy bed and heavy black out curtains. A little Baby Bjorn bassinet fits perfectly next to my side of the bed and I’m excited to have a comfortable place to nestle in this fall with our little newborn.

Things I want to tell you:
You don’t need a matching bedroom set to have a cohesive space
You can “shop” the rest of your house to redesign a space for zero dollars
Making the bed and tidying the curtains will make you automatically like your bedroom better
