Spring 2020 One Room Challenge, Week One: Master Bedroom Plan

In 2018, we bought a fixer upper and found out a month and a half later we’d be having a baby. A priority list was made. We needed to finish the closet-turned-laundry-room, revisit the temporary kitchen remodel, build new front steps, get the family room finished, get started on the guest bathroom and not to mention, figure out a nursery. In the middle of the craziness of those 8 months, we decided to give the master bedroom a mini makeover to get it ready for life with a newborn.

We painted the ceiling, lowered our bed, replaced our rug and reupholstered our headboard. It felt a lot better than before but once our daughter, Hyler, actually came, it was pretty noticeably just a temporary fix. Our bed frame was an $80 purchase from a few years before and was made out of a cheap, bendable metal. We spent the first year of Hyler’s life worried that it was going to fall apart while we slept every night. The location wasn’t great either. My side of the bed was a foot away from the door which seemed to be ideal to get up with the baby in the night but it also meant I had zero space to keep a robe or throw laundry. Having a bed right inside the door made our large room feel tight and hard to move around in. It wasn’t a bad makeover but it wasn’t complete by any means.

This year came with a unique opportunity (or problem, depending on how you look at it)—we had to move out along with all of our furniture to have our lead ridden windows replaced. We decided that we wouldn’t be moving our broken bed, thrifted dressers and miscellaneous things from our apartment that just didn’t work. Of course, there’s no reason to scrap everything so we’re taking the good of what we had and combining it with some new things. We’re expecting our second child early this fall so we’re doing another pre-baby makeover without going overboard. It also lined up perfectly with the timing of the One Room Challenge so we’re all in!! We moved it all out in March and it looked like this right before we put the broken bed frame on the side of the road:

You can see the new layout a little in this shot — instead of a dresser under this window, we put our bed. It’s worked out well like this so it’ll be part of the final design. Other things in this photo like the rug and nightstands will stay too. Considering swapping out the original light fixture for something a little more modern but I can’t decide. Opinions?

Here’s my moodboard for the makeover:

We’re repurposing the green velvet curtains from the living room, the lounge chair and artwork from Austin’s office and keeping the ceiling color, lamps, rug and nightstands. The new things will be dressers, bed, a bench and accents. I’m also considering redoing the closet as part of the One Room Challenge so that we have more useable storage and organization before the new baby comes. I’m keeping the palette a mix of grey, oatmeal, black, white and cream for the neutrals (so many!) and then layering warm wood tones, dusty green and clay colors. Might add blue or yellow but haven’t committed yet.

So that’s the plan. Since we were able to start a little early on the ORC and because we moved back into our house a few weeks ago, we already have some things in place like the new furniture from Article, velvet curtains and rug but there’s still a ways to go to finish the space. I hope you’ll follow along!

Here’s a peek at where we’re at!

That small door is the closet so I still don’t have a ton of space to keep anything near me but maybe if I had closet storage, things would be easier this time around.
